Hi,

Is there a way to set an aplha value (transparent color) to the background?

Yes that is possible. Fill a layer with a color of your choice, then click on the gear icon next to the layer, a window will popup with the name "Layer settings" there you can change the opacity of the layer. 255 = 100%
