Status of release 0.3.109

Danik
Apr 17, 2015 at 7:21 pm
Hi there!

It's been a very long time without updates, so I thought I'd just write a bit about that status of the next release.
The todo-list is huge with lots of things I want to fix and add, and I'm still short on free time so I have to prioritize. I have been focusing on usability and stability for this release. The last one had a bunch of crash bugs which makes the delay more embarrassing, but this one should be more stable. I will try to make smaller more frequent bugfix releases in the future, and having some testers to get early prerelease feedback from should help (see link at the bottom).

Here is the current changelog:

  • Fixed drag and drop.
  • Fixed issue resulting in a gray screen on startup.
  • Fixed animation viewport issue when switching frame after zooming.
  • Fixed frame delay when changing animation, so that it no longer sticks until end of frame.
  • Fixed animation playback panel buttons not getting deactivated when no document was open.
  • Added BMP export support.
  • Fixed layer blend modes not getting loaded properly.
  • Improved undo behaviour for selection tool.
  • Moved user config into separate file, so that it survives version updates etc.
  • Separated config files into settings, keybindings, layout and persistant state.
  • User keybindings now override defaults based on action or key combination.
  • Added optional loading of default config files from application directory (for portable version).
  • Added optional loading of plain text license file from application directory (for portable version)
  • Improved export dialogs layout.
  • Made export dialogs remember last used paths per document.
  • Separated export file name and path inputs.
  • Added dropdown for recently used paths.
  • Added control for choosing the background color for formats with limited transparency support (fixes purple semi-transparent pixels in GIFs).
  • Removed "auto" file format option.
  • Fixed "Tiles as separate files" option not being remembered.
  • Fixed crash on closing a unsaved document with changes using the "X" button and choosing yes in save dialog.
  • Fixed issue where license checking failed if the name began or ended with a space.
  • Fixed Ctrl+H hiding the application window until you kill it on Windows.
  • Added NES palette preset.
  • Added "Edit settings" menu item to layer right click menus.
  • Added "=" to zoom in (for US keyboards).
  • Added setting to disable double click to select tile with selection tool.
  • Added setting for maximum brush size.
  • Fixed crash when creating a new document after detaching and closing the preview panel.
  • Make detached widgets update their title properly.
  • Refactoring brush stroke system to show exact stroke results during stroke (including erased pixels, blend modes etc.).
  • Moved onion skins on top of current frame pixel contents.
  • Fixed issue with glitchy alpha on the edges of tiles with certain transformations.
  • Added cancelling of strokes by hitting the other mouse button, with setting to enable/disable the feature.
  • Allowing picking a new color from document or palette while using Replace color or Adjust swatch color.
  • Added button "Use clipboard size" when making a new single tile document.
  • Made the animated GIF importer choose the width and height of the document more intelligently to be as close to a square as possible.
  • Added a dialog with choices "Single tile", "Tiled image" and "Animated GIF", when drag-n-dropping an image from the OS, instead of assuming a tiled image.

The brush stroke drawing system has been remade to show in-progress strokes more accurately (blend modes etc) and to be more flexible and general, which means I will be able to add more drawing tools soon without a lot of wasteful work (shape tools for instance).

Multi tile drawing is not done yet, since it requires some pretty big changes, but it's high on the todo list. I could spend the time and implement it but I want to get this release out as soon as possible.

PS. If you can't wait and are interested in testing prereleases see this thread: http://pyxeledit.com/forum/discussion/396/prerelease-beta-testing

That looks like a nice upcoming update, I certainly cannot wait to play around with it. I still miss a " Added a flip selection on x and y axis" but as you have to draw the line somewhere, I understand your prioritization with usability and stability. I will just have to wait a bit more for that one :)

Yeah, it look amazing !
+1 for the flip selection !

Does the betat testing version will crush my current working PyxelEdit ? If it behave like another application, I'll beta test it with pleasure :)

I bought Pyxel Edit yesterday, and I was wondering how I can update my program once the new version is out?

And will plugins be supported later on?

I'm sorry if I'm reposting, I looked through the FAQ but couldn't find my questions.

@Jintezaku If i recall correctly, PyxelEdit does not update automatically. I presume that Danik willl either send out emails with the new version or direct you to the "Private License page" which was sent to your mail when you purchased the software. :)

Apr 21, 2015 at 8:05 pm
CandyFace, yes it's painful to have to choose what to leave out because I want to fix everything. :)

WegPast, thanks. Yes I will give the test version a different id which means it will install alongside the normal version.

Kasumi, yes I know, I suffer with you. I really want to add this as soon as I can.

Jintezaky, the current version will notify you that there is a new version available, and then you have to download it from your Humble download page, or license page on this site. For major versions I will probably also send out an email message.

I am really missing scroll to pan and pinch to zoom. Will this be added soon? It is one of the few things preventing me from fully switching to PyxelEdit.
Oh, and could either the "L" in the color mixing panel be replaced with a "V" or could Pyxel use HSL instead of HSV. It's more intuitive, more commonly used, and more liked.

Alex, it's not hard to get used to it. There are so many features in PE that make it better than any other image editing software for pixel art that a little thing like that shouldn't matter. Yes I somewhat agree to it but for all the people who are already used to it, it will suck. By the wat you can hold space and pan by dragging, just a tip. Also, it is HSL, I don;t get why you think the color picker is HSV.

Damn... Alex said some truth...
CandyFace
Apr 29, 2015 at 7:46 am
What truth?

PyxelEdit uses the HSL color space, it even says so in the color panel itself. Also here is a comparison between the two color spaces should anyone be curious.

Huh... I mixed the two... Yeah, you'r right :(

By the way, @Alex_x6, don't forget about the advanced color panel :

You may find another way to find your colors :)

When making multi tile  please also add to be able to add a sprite of any dimension so that it doesn't depend on tile size. So like I can have a tile background and a player character (a different layer in any size) in the same scene.

@Danik, how about changing the background logo in the application at the next release aswell, there is no reason for not using your heart icon to stay consistent to your website, not to mention that it also looks better ;)

@CandyFace, I dunno, I kind of like the background now, it's more discrete and square shaped, but I'll consider it. ;)

I too would like this. In Photoshop (win), holding down Ctrl+Space while left click mouse dragging, gives you an interactive zoom. very handy, i use it constantly.

The release date is unknown, though if you're okay with a potentially glitchy build, then you could apply for the pre-releaase beta.

Can't wait for the release! It's been a long time coming. I also cannot wait for Multi Tile Drawing.

Question/Request: is there any way to add an option to use arrow keys (or whatever other keys) to scroll through your titles, changing which one you have selected while you're using the mouse cursor to place tiles? That way I don't have to move the arrow, pick one from the tile palette, move the cursor to the canvas, place it, then move the arrow back over to the tile palette to select the next one I want to use. I could just use the up, down, left and right arrow keys to move a cursor within the tile palette. scrolling through and selecting which tile I want to use next. I would find this feature useful, along side Multi Tile Drawing. :)

Thanks for creating Pyxel Edit, and keep up the awesome work!

@zi11ion
Multi-tile-drawing is possible already, if i understand your question correctly. If you use the tile placer tool, and then click on the tiles you want to be drawn on simultaneously, then the brush should paint on all the tiles you chosen. tip: hovering over most of the tools, will tell you about it's shortcuts and uses.
You can see an example here:

As for the other thing, no currently there are no ways of navigating the tiles except with the mouse.

Nah, that's not what we mean by multi tile drawing. But I can see the confusion. Probably shouldn't be called "Drawing" :)
Multi tile drawing is not done yet, since it requires some pretty big changes, but it's high on the todo list. I could spend the time and implement it but I want to get this release out as soon as possible.
What we mean (if I'm on the same page as everyone...) is being able to select a group of tiles and place them elsewhere, instead of selecting each one individually then placing them. But not as a copy/paste.

This is what it would solve:
I truly cannot wait for the multi tile drawing, because doing this is still suffering: http://i.imgur.com/qigHvaN.gif
The multi-tile drawing would be, I imagine, similar to how it's done in Tiled. Stamping and such. :)

This is my first comment on this forum and I wan't to say thank you for this awesome tool.
I have used this tool for all my ludum dare games.

A big, big wish from my side would be, disable painting (pencil, copy past, placing tile and more) on layer which are hidden.

Hello hepary,

No PyxelEdit is not abandonware, Danik is actively working on it, he's just too busy sharing information about his changes. The product is still available, supported and in development which means that by definition it can't be considered abandonware.

If you have any comments, suggestions or feedback, please make a new thread instead of leaving unnecessary comments here.
Thank you :)

It's no secret that development has been on pretty much on hold for quite a while now. I thought I would be able to work part time on it but I was wrong, work takes far too much energy.
The reason I haven't released 109 is that I hit a roadblock that needs some focused work to overcome (the way tools handle their state and delegate to other tools), and I just haven't found the time and energy to fix it.
The project at work has a planned release in the beginning of December, so assuming we hit that date I will try my best to get the next release out before 2016.

For the future I will consider the available options, if possible I want to work on it full time, but if that doesn't work I'll consider bringing other developers on the project or some kind of open source model.

Its okay Danik <3 we love you and your program. Other devs would help with you so busy (: but your true community knows you're getting around to it. Open source sounds good too! No matter what you do, this community is behind you.

Abandonware.
Bold and unnecessary comment man..not cool. And so wrong to.

@Danik:
Take your Time. I'd rather wait a tad longer for a stable update than a "hush hush" buggy release.
And(!) Pyxeledit is a great and working piece of software as it is right now.
If you can't make it before 2016, we'll all understand (except hepary maybe ;-) ) and still appreciate your work so far!

I'll consider bringing other developers on the project or some kind of open source model.
If this became open source, I would definitely contribute! No matter what happens, I'm still really looking forward to the next release.
If you're at a roadblock, I'd just release a new version with some of the more lightweight changes to tide people over. I could really use that maximum brush size setting. It sucks to have to make big circles in Photoshop and then copy/paste them over to Pyxel Edit.

Then again, I think the majority of us are pretty understanding. A lot of time, energy, and thought goes into software development. Keep up the good work! I've been recommending Pyxel Edit to everyone who asks about my art.

I want to apologize to @Danik and everyone offended by that unnecessary comment. I uninstalled the program on that day for the third time out of frustration. (No excuse, I know)

Actually, I have long given up on finding a streamlined work process with Pyxel Edit, despite it having some smart features. Instead I have just been using Photoshop.

I think that this project should go open source. I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to improve on it.

@hepary, apology accepted. If I remember correctly you had problems with animating using multiple layers, and I can understand your frustration with the workflow in that case. It's ok when you use one layer, but with multiple layers it can be very painful atm.

Asesprite is cool and can do a lot of things, but its interface is rather cumbersome and doesn't feel as easy to use as PE in my opinion. It has a certain learning curve, which i personally didn't encounter with PE.

Based on what is available on the market, i would agree that PE one of the easiest to work with, and that is based on my experience with ASE, GraphicsGale, Grafx2 and Photoshop.

I didn't wanna start a discussion about other programs, but...
First of all, Asesprite is pretty much complete, PyxelEdit is not.
Asesprite offers hotkey configuration, color palette control, customizable palette presets, efficient and intuitive timeline control with onion skinning and all. Plus, you can move multiple layers at the same time which lacks in PE, layer blending options (multiply, overlay...) and much more. Plus, its tools are designed in a manner similar to Photoshop, which is also a huge plus point.

To each his own, but as someone who has tested all the softwares you have mentioned - and also programs from other countries - I gotta say that I like Asesprite more. This may be a stupid thing to say since this is a PE forum, but imho, Asesprite wins by a long distance.

Neither did i, but i felt like i had to write something when you wrote that :3
And yes exactly as you said, which i also mentioned myself, ASE can do a lot of things and is on full time development as of recently. I never bought into the 1.0 release, though i used the program up till its commercial release, so Its possible that there might have been done some improvement on the interface which i am not aware of, but when i used ASE i initially had to use quite of a bit time to learn to navigate the interface, learn new shortcuts(or edit...). Normally such things wouldn't be a problem, though in my case, at that time i didn't want to fiddle with a new and different interface, i just wanted to draw and animate to get on with my work, which PE allowed me to.
Another rather important note for my partial decision of "investing" into PE rather than ASE would be that i found it really annoying to work with on OSX, which is my workstation...

It's okay for you to say that you prefer ASE to PE. As you said, to each his own and if that is what you prefer, that's cool. I have so far been able to get around almost all my problems with PE, but i'm occasionally using other tools too, to get some jobs done which PE can't do for me.

btw. I never said that PE was better or that ASE couldn't do things, I just gave my opinion on PE being the easiest to get started with, based on your comment to ProfBot.

You could improve the tilemap exporter to allow for custom properties to be stored in tilemaps. Also the txt exporter could store more metadata. On open sourcing it- PE is built upon proprietary adobe library Air. Not sure if many os devs would like to pick ot up. On other professional alternatibes-Has anyome tried Cosmigo Pro Motion?

I'm very sorry about the lack of information and updates.

Pyxel Edit still is not abandoned, but the project I'm working on has got delayed. Also I have been in a bit of a slump, I blame the winter darkness.
There has been some work on it during the holidays though, and I will release a new private beta to the testers very soon.

Here is a list of changes since the last one:

--
  • Fixed selection shape not being respected when copying.
  • Improved selection tool behavior. It now includes the clicked pixel in the selection, which has a minimum with and height of 1 pixel.
  • Fixed dragdrop of BMP images into app.
  • Made workspace recent paths update when opening a Recent file from the menu.
  • Big refactoring of the export panels. Fixed tilemap not exporting only the selected layers.
  • Fixed "Export tilemap" menu item disabled state when no open doc.
  • Small bug fixes in export panels. Made transparency matte bg color save with document.
  • Made transparency matte color selector show in animated GIF export panel.
  • Fixed using Replace color with transparent colors.
  • Made transp. matte color get remembered both as app-wide last used setting and per document.
  • Made palette export/import path get remembered.
  • Added eraser as a secondary operation for the pen tool.
  • Made the color replacer tool show colored brush preview instead of outline.
  • Fixed selection menu items not being deactivated when no open document.
  • Fixed application window title not updating on saving a document with a new name.
  • Fixed blend modes not working on copy merged.
  • Fixed round brush for color replacer tool.
  • Added a "flip selected"-feature and made it accessible in selection menu (ctrl+F, ctrl+shift+F).
  • Fixed scrollbar not showing for layer checkboxes in tilemap export panel.
  • Fixed MMB-panning getting stuck if done after space-panning.
  • Working eraser with selection mask.
  • Fixed undo for animation range tool animation range change action.
  • Fixed tool delegation.
  • Made brush size increase/decrease using scroll work for all tools responding to the action.
  • Fixed brush stroke getting in an inconsistent state when changing brush size mid stroke.
  • Made "other layers transparent on pan" disabled by default.
  • Added action and menu item for showing settings window.
  • Fixed bug that made files for layers with identical names get overwritten when exporting image layers as separate files.
  • Fixed selections getting the wrong color for selected parts after inverting, which broke the fill tool

It's almost been a year since the last update.

I'm all for encouraging words, but even if you did 1 thing every two weeks we would have something by now. It sounds like you're nearing(cough) the release of the next update though, so I can't wait to get my hands on it!

I absolutely adore the program. Keep up the good work! I really don't think I would be as happy as fledgling pixel artist if this program didn't exist, so please keep trucking!

I hope I don't come off as rude, as much as frank. I really want to see this program shine, and I suggest it to all my friends!

Why don't you just release a beta version for everyone to try out and give feedback about every change instead of making us wait for so long? You could just do that, release a version with all of these changes as a "beta beta" version, I decided to swap over to Aseprite after I finish the project I'm working on just because of the time you make us wait, if the software was open source then I wouldn't even care, but people are pretty much paying for this, I really love the program due to how damn user friendly it is, but I'm just tired of so many annoying bugs.

I have to say i agree with Samuel. While this is a great tool it is lacking so many key functions and tools. I don't have a solution but would love to know what the current plan is. Also i sent an email to get on the beta list for the new version, is this still a thing? i have yet to receive any information,

Yes getting into the beta is still a thing, and the newest pre-release is only about a month old. When did you sent the email? He usually respond to beta emails relatively fast.

on this software, I find it really very good, I also useful pro motion and I find pyxel edit much more intuitive, now for me , I miss the tools circle , rectangle. And also for tiles , the tiles are added gradually as one draws above .
these are just a small thing that I miss personally , but for the rest I love the simplicity and the interface of your software.

sorry for my bad English

Good continuation

Heads up guys!
new pre-release out for people who joined the beta.
Changes for 0.3.109PR4:
  • Fixed automatic tool switching between pen and eraser when picking transparent/opaque color with second mouse button.
  • Added extras menu with "refresh all tiles in the canvas" item. Moved experimental color replace to extras menu.
  • Made color picker "Use all layers" setting get remembered between sessions, and shared with pen tool RMB color picking.
  • Fixed bug where pixels masked off when drawing with Tile mask enabled were lingering in stroke buffer and reappeared when drawing in that region later.
  • Made pen tool brush preview show Tile mask effect before stroking.
  • Added undo for layer blend mode changes.
  • Raised the distance threshold before dragging tileset and palette items, to make accidental dragging harder.
  • Fixed small error where the marquee selection tooltip displayed the wrong size for 1x1 selections.
  • Fix misaligned tile/pixel grid rendering
Thanks @Danik!

Yup, I sent out a new private beta yesterday. I'll give the testers a couple of days and if no big issues are found I will release it to everyone.

Yeah, it's been a long time and I'm not proud of it. I took some bad decisions and bite of more than I could chew. Among other things I had to fix parts that were hacked together in order to get the earlier releases out, and implement them again properly. Then I also got a much bigger work load than expected. The release is really close now though (promise!). Thanks for the honest feedback.

The main reason was that I broke some things, and I didn't want to release a new version where some old features didn't work any longer. I should have got a bugfix release out much sooner before trying to solve the bigger problems, I realize this now and will try to work that way in the future. I will probably start releasing the prerelease versions to everyone, and just mark the latest big release as stable.

Thanks ced57130. Yes, shape tools are essential. It's strange that they are not requested more often. :)

I certainly am not WAITING for shape tools :3
Sounds good Danik, can't wait to see releases more often. Releasing them for all sounds like good idea too, and then just mark them as pre-beta.

Yeah, I too love to draw cercles with a big brush round stroke and a bit smaller eraser stroke, hours of funs x) And yes, sounds good Danik, I'm happy to see the return of the automatic tool swithcing between pen and eraser ! :) I'll give a try this in some few hours.

@CandyFace Yes, I think this will be a better way to go about it.

@WegPast Hehe, yeah, isn't there something satisfying about it? ;)

I don't know if this has already been asked about, but will there be an option to have the preview panel follow your position in the document? I can't help but find it annoying sometimes.

So far I feel this version is much more stable than the current one, the only, but the only thing that I don't really like is that the erase tool now shows a white circle instead of the old gray one, I feel that one was a lot better.
