Custom selection copying as a rectangle

I noticed yesterday that if you make an selection and remove some pixels, making it non rectangle then the selection will still copy the pixels which are not selected. The following gif shows an example.
In my example, i want to copy the cape without the arm, doing so by deselecting pixels works fine and i can move the selection too but as soon as I need to copy it, it turns into a rectangle selection, giving me half the body.
