The way to use the gradient tool, is to add the two colors to the palette, you wish a color grade in between. then while selecting the first color, hold down shift and select the second color, you should see a small box marked inside the second color now. That indicates that you have have a start and end color. At this point, when you click the make gradient button, the following should happen ;)
