Hi there! This is my first attempt at making pixel art and my first time using Pyxel Edit.

So far I'm loving the program and have used it to create my first character sprite.  I'm attempting to develop loose sequel to Secret of Evermore. To what degree I'm not entirely sure yet but I'd like to get some opinions on how my Hero is coming along. He feels almost complete to me, the walking animation is the only one worthy of posting. Would love to hear any thoughts on my sprite and how to improve him in any way possible.

I have edited the sprite a bit from my original post and added one additional frame, as well as slowed it down a bit, hope this improved it a bit.

Sorry about that, it showed up after I edited the post but then was removed, so I just linked it externally. Hopefully it shows up now :)

I think you may want a few more transition frames. Otherwise, good WIP

Thanks Hanenopi, I agree since it's my first animation of a human sprite I wasn't sure what a good amount of frame would be. It's currently 7 frames, I was thinking of making roughly 9-10. I think it needs a frame or two near the end to make a smoother transition to standing idle, also one in the middle so his leg movement seems a bit smoother.

Ok so i have a few tips for you, if you want to animate smoother, get a decent image of a run cycle from google would be the first bit of advice.

next, you want to make key frames first.
  • springing into the run
  • both feet off the ground
  • front foot hitting the floor
  • and absorbing the step
once you have these key frames you can then put in more frames to smooth the transition
here is an example
visualize this for all angles.

also a tip to remember is the movement of the persons arms, arms and legs move in opposites so if the left leg is the forward leg, then the right arm will be forward, but if the right leg is forward the left arm will be forward.

hope this helps

This is a side animation created for the same character. I took your advice and tried to apply it as much as possible. I'm reworking the front animation as we speak and will post an updated version. I also have a few other animations such as damage, block and spell casting that I would like to get some criticism on but they are not ready yet, will post more soon!
