You can drag a straight line from anywhere using the pen tool.
Just hold down shift and click+drag.

It's a tool I used a lot back in the early 2000s when I couldn't afford good software. Not sure if this has been requested before but is that something we can look forward to?

Wow I didn't read that before but it seems to lock on to a grid instead of move freely.
Is that something I can change?

It should only locks to angles if you hold down ctrl.
