Is there a way to export image as an 8-bit indexed PNG?

Or will I have to use a separate software like IrfanView to "down" the bit-depth?

Need to know that, because PE is just lovely for making tiles and I'm currently using RPG Maker 2003 which only supports 8-bit images (though the program itself is AFAIK 16 or even 24bit since you can display multiple images with completely different palettes).

That's not possible, no. As mentioned in the FAQ:
Pyxel Edit supports full 32 bit ARGB color. The means the Palette is not a "hard" palette, you may use any other color in your images.

Exporting has the same limitation, so you'll have to another software to do that.

This is disappointing to hear.  I've spent the last SEVERAL HOURS trying to properly create a 4 bit image from some Pyxel Edit content.  It does a great job with a 16 color tileset but then the actual exported data is useless to me.  :-(
