Animation Theory
Hi!
I'm a total noob to pixel art and pixel creation (as I've just recently started moving into game development at the age of 40). I have a question, and I'm wondering if I'm overthinking it: I'm trying to make my character breathe when he's idle.
I just can't seem to get the pacing / timing right though. I always end up making him look like he's rapidly shrugging his shoulders instead of slowly taking a regular breath.

It's easier to give you feedback and help you if you post your wip animation. There could be multiple ways of improving your breathing idle animation, depending on the size, color scheme and style of your animation. The first thing that comes to mind though is using sub-pixel animation. https://2dwillneverdie.com/tutorial/give-your-sprites-depth-with-sub-pixel-animation/
This technique can be used to improve sprite animations significantly and help provide smoother or more expressive animations, like breathing.
